Scarab

Khepri is a scarab-faced god of ancient Egypt who represents the rising sun and thus the creation and the renewal of life.

He was often depicted as a scarab beetle, a symbolic representation of the divine manifestation of the morning sun.

In the same way that the beetle pushes large balls of dung along the ground, Khepri moved the newly-born sun across the sky.

Khepri and another solar deity, Atum, were seen as aspects of Ra: Khepri was the morning sun, Ra was the midday sun, and Atum was the sun in the evening.

Amenhotep III was famed for having commemorative scarabs manufactured. These were large and made of steatite. These scarabs were intricately crafted and created under royal supervision.
