viris

VIRIS delves into the intricate dance between the invasion of senses and the resilience of the human spirit, the nature of vulnerability. The experience of both fear and wonderment.

The starting point for this exhibition was the closing scene from the schlock horror movie Jeeper Creepers when the Creeper takes the eyes from the head of Darry to use for himself. So now Darry would be forever looking out of the Creepers head.

At the heart of VIRIS lies this exploration of eyes as channels through which experiences, and vulnerabilities are expressed and perceived. The eyes serving as mirrors of the soul. We see out from an interior blackness to an external light. But what looks back at us? Are inside and outside the same? In these images we look at that which looks at us.

We take in this exterior world as a virus enters our bodies. We are changed by the process. Acknowledging the fragility of our senses we cultivate a deeper appreciation of the wonder of this sense gate. But at times we do so through almost closed fingers.
