Wei Xue (Curated by Neal Tolunsky and Margo Grant)

A MORA Art Museum Exhibit
Wei Xue takes deep inspiration from nature, and in particular, from the beauty that emerges on very large and small scales. Indeed, some of her paintings are at once reminiscent of aerial photography and of the lacing on a precious stone like agate (her large-scale acrylic work “Summer Carnival,” for example, manages to evoke for this viewer both the Mississippi Delta and a swirling marble). Wei Xue’s abstractions capture the mystery and majesty of the natural world (suggesting volcanic activity, meadows, mountains, forests, oceans, and more), while also asking the viewer to relate to such vastness on a personal, emotional level (many even have conceptual titles such as “Fruit of My Past Memory”). Like the seascapes of J.M.W. Turner, her works have a strongly mystical atmosphere, a thickly surreal quality that induces a sense of wonder and raises all kinds of inchoate questions about the strangeness of our world. Unlike Turner, however, whose oils can sometimes bewilder and put one in a melancholy frame of mind, Wei’s works tend to feel joyous, hopeful, and spontaneous. The artist writes, “Growing up in Northwestern China, I spent countless hours exploring the local forests, fields, and streams, and I was always drawn to the vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and subtle details that surrounded me.” With a virtuosic command of color, texture, composition, and a variety of painterly techniques in her chosen medium of acrylic on canvas, Wei translates this experience with mesmerizing results, taking us on an enchanting journey, somewhat akin to traveling to some far-flung corner of the Earth where no person has been before.
Note for the viewer: Some of the paintings are much larger than they appear, but had to be scaled down in order to fit in the room.
