Folsom St Parade - Photojournalism by T Dingman

Since my late twenties, I wanted to go to the Mermaid Parade in NYC. I live nearby and it was one of those things I constantly deferred (along with Mardi Gras, The NYC Halloween Parade and travel in Europe). In 2015, I was living in Newark, NJ. I was working in Community development and the Arts in Newark and had friends in NYC who were vastly more experienced than I in the Arts and LGBTQ communities in Newark and NYC.

In June of 2015, I mentioned to Rob Ordonits that I wanted to see the Mermaid parade and asked he I could go with him, (largely to have his guidance in custom, behavior and communication at that event). Rob, a NYC photographer and artist, told me not to bother. That it was totally tame and commercial but, I should go with him and Geary Marcello (the fashion designer and founder of Foxy Face Fashions) to the Folsom St. East celebration. He warned me to “be prepared to be surprised.” I was.

I attended with him and Geary in 2015 and 2016. I have missed it every summer since

Leather, Bears, Pups and more. No one was camera shy. The purpose of the organization on the East and West coasts, and cities in between, is to raise money to give grants to other nonprofits, not all of them working directly for LGBTQ rights.

Note 3X19 prints are available in limited editions of 5 for all works starting at $150.
