The paintings depicting formulas are part of Sviatoslav Virsta's art project, called "I Formula", the project "I Formula" aims to develop ideas for the
aesthetic embodiment of mathematical formulas in paintings and other art forms. Professors V. Maslyuchenko (Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Chernivtsi, Ukraine) andI. Ogirko (Doctor of Physical and
Mathematical Sciences, Lviv, Ukraine) became scientific consultants for
Sviatoslav Virsta during the process of creating the paintings. According to art critics and experts in contemporary art from around the world, the art project
"I Formula" opens a new direction in the space of contemporary art at the turn of the new century and millennium, based on the synthesis of contemporary art and science. The new direction of contemporary art was named φ-rstoizm (firstoizm) thanks to S. Virsta and art critic from Poland Monika Garbacz.
The presentation of the project "I Formula" took place on November 26, 2017 in the Chernivtsi Cultural Center "Vernissage" on Ivan Franko street on the 55th anniversary of the birth of S. Virsta. Within a year from the opening of
the exhibition, the role of mathematics in art was analyzed from a scientific point of view, in particular, a scientific article by V. Maslyuchenko was written and accepted for publication. This material was covered at two international and All-Ukrainian mathematical conferences. From a scientific point of view, the number φ (φ-rstoizm (firstoizm)) is found in mathematics (pentagram, Binet's formula) and in art, in particular in architecture. The golden section was
studied by the ancient Greeks, in particular it is in the "Beginnings" of Euclid, but the name itself arose later, it was introduced by Leonardo da Vinci.
Luca Pacioli wrote about his aesthetic role in art in his book “The Divine Proportion” (1508), which is believed to have been illustrated by Leonardo da Vinci. Similar mathematical motives appear in the works of the famous German artist Albrecht Dürer, author of the famous painting "Melancholy", you can also see them in the works of contemporary artists. The golden section plays an important role in the work "Aesthetic Studies" by the German psychologist and poet Adolf Zeising. The golden section is found in the Pyramid of Cheops, the Parthenon and other buildings, this proportion is considered the most beautiful for the human eye. Most of S. Virsta’s paintings of the art project "I Formula" looks like a black school board, on which mathematical formulas are depicted on the background of chaotic signs. Some of the paintings have a plot depicting the formulas that are related to each other. In other paintings, the free flight of the artist's imagination prevails. Some of them are related to the achievements of world-class mathematicians.
