The Taiyuan Tomb of Zhen Fan
In August 2018 workmen extending the the West Central Ring Road in Taiyuan City, stumbled across a single-chamber brick tomb with a sloping tomb passage. Taiyuan lies 500kms northeast of Xi'an, site of the Tang dynasty capital. The tomb belonged to Zhen Fan, who make have owned a noodle shop. The tomb has a mural painting that suggests that he may have owned a noodle shop. It also has a series of panels depicting 'people under trees' . Zhen Fan died in 736CE at the age of sixty-three.
The city archaeologists released the report on their findings in In June 2024. The tomb itself has been backfilled to prevent damage. This is the first, and for some time only, site to view the tomb in a (virtual) museum setting
Since 1945 over twenty mural tombs have been unearthed in Taiyuan, which lies 500kms northeast of Xi'an, site of the Tang dynasty capital. All of them have "people under trees" paintings. It is possible to establish dates for six of them, ranging from 696 to 736CE. This is the subject of this exhibition, that will explore three of them.
