Byzantium ( 5th-10th centuries ). Room Two: Ivory

The museum reflects the strong Byzantine tradition of ivory carving. Ivory carving was inhibited between 726 and 842 by the prohibition on the representation of religious figurative imagery. When it resumed, it was in a form much more natural than before. 27 carved ivories that have been selected from fourteen museums spread over eight countries.
