Powerful and harmonious images, where photography transcends into painting

Carmela Rizzuti

Carmela Rizzuti's works communicate with intensity and a particular "attractive" force, which immediately makes the viewer enter the work, transporting him into an abstract and timeless, completely new space, in which the self-portrait no longer represents himself but a thousand different figures and emotions.

"A portrait is always a translation of a self that can never be captured": the artist tells through his own image, from time to time, different themes, starting from the female figure who becomes the fulcrum of communication, in her relationship with existence, in her strength, in being an allegory of nature and life itself; Several contrasting aspects of the feminine in the contemporary are also revealed, as a kaleidoscope of today and at the same time a timeless icon.

Carmela Rizzuti's photographs seem to be transformed into painted works that run through the history of art, giving new life to fragments of our artistic and emotional heritage, from the Titian red of the mantles to the waxed white of Canova, from the contrasts of Op art to the veiled Baroque; nature becomes a dress with references to the Pre-Raphaelite painters, for whom the timeless aspect is intertwined with real beauty and a dreamlike atmosphere.

The photographic composition also recalls the art of theatre, without the need for a background or stage but only the artist's body; props become apparitions and key symbols for reading and communication; Close to surrealism and with references to magical realism, they complete an original vision, making the artist's self-portraits unique and authentic "visual stories".

In the richness of his works, some series of works stand out, including those made in black and white, where the female figure shows two different aspects of the self; Transformed by large white petals that act as a corolla like an evening dress, it represents the bond with nature and the feminine, while the wind seems to be able to carry everything away in an instant, a symbol of the transience of beauty. The same dualism is present in the photographs of veiled women, which seem to come

from the painted Madonnas of the Renaissance, intertwined with the cultural roots of the woman as chaste bride; But those almost transparent veils are embroidered with flowers and elements of nature and the woman with her eyes closed seems to breathe deeply, overcoming barriers and savoring the intensity of life.

Another series is dedicated to "absolute red", with refined, unprecedented and powerful images that reflect the love for painting; Emblematic is the woman as a symbol of beauty, strength and passion, represented from behind, while on the back two red poppy flowers reveal her simple fragility. Among these works, a woman with an umbrella stands out, illuminating her face from the inside and letting poppies fall like light rain; It is perhaps the only true self-portrait of the artist because it tells its story in a surreal and poetic representation, protected and illuminated by art.

Finally, the energy of life and nature explodes in the women dressed in flowers of intense and bright colors, which run through their hair; Each flower has another value, in addition to the decorative and symbolic one, as it seems to smell its scent, creating a particular synaesthesia in the observer. Sometimes elements of the animal world that look like plants also appear, such as corals and peacock feathers, with surprising chromatic effects.

All of Carmela Rizzuti's photographic images, rich in light, beauty and harmony, reveal through the colors of art and nature an intense soul and a powerful poetry, which inevitably enraptures us.
