A carreira de um dos maiores ilustradores do Brasil completa 50 anos em 2024. São uma infinidade de obras representativas do popular e da riqueza cultural brasileira que extravasaram as fronteiras do país e foram mostrar lá fora, como já haviam mostrado no restante do país, o talento e criatividade deste filho de Pernambuco.
Lendas de vários países e contos clássicos universais, muitos deles incorporados à literatura de Cordel, a literatura erudita de Shakespeare, bem como situações inusitadas como a viagem de Roosvelt e Rondon pela Amazônia, são exemplos dos personagens que ganham vida no traço seguro de Jô e nas cores vivas que ele sabe usar como ninguém.
Visando celebrar estes 50 anos de sucesso, esta exposição virtual apresenta 50 obras do artista, percorrendo as diversas fases de sua carreira. Mostra entre outros quadrinhos, cartazes, selos premiados, livros em geral, Cordel e livros infantis, contando uma história que percorre:

Muito poderia ser escrito, e mostrado, sobre a vastíssima obra de Jô Oliveira. Escritor, designer, gravador, ilustrador, quadrinista, chargista, capista de livros, cartazista e renomado criador de selos postais. Portanto, esta exposição virtual é uma louvável iniciativa, mesmo considerando ser uma amostragem parcial dos trabalhos deste singular artista brasileiro.
Apesar de sua sólida formação acadêmica em desenho, obtida tanto no Brasil quanto no exterior, desde a Escola de Belas Artes no Rio de Janeiro, ele optou para representar, em suas imagens, o universo gráfico e cultural do nordeste brasileiro. Na verdade, o seu trabalho é um estuário de várias influências. Em primeiro lugar, como elemento básico, seria a arte torêutica popular nordestina, em especial a xilogravura. A seguir viriam as peças e grupos figurativos em barro. Outras influências de além-fronteiras convergem para a formação do artista. Cito a gravura popular russa, o Lubok, e os ícones búlgaros e bizantinos.
Artista de grande cultura artística, a sua obra é uma amálgama essencialmente brasileira e originária de culturas diversas. Isso é muito o Brasil. Jô Oliveira é o porta-voz visual do imaginário de nosso país.

RESUMÉ JÔ OLIVEIRA
Pernambucano da Ilha de Itamaracá, passou boa parte da sua infância em Campina Grande, PB, e a adolescência em Aquidauana e Ponta Porã, MS.
Foi aluno da Escola Nacional de Belas Artes no Rio de Janeiro, e por seis anos morou em Budapeste, Hungria. Durante seis meses estudou desenho animado no Stúdió Pannónia, e depois frequentou a Academia Húngara de Artes Aplicadas (Magyar Iparmüvészeti Föiskola, hoje conhecida como Universidade Moholy-Nagy de Arte e Design), onde concluiu o curso de Artes Gráficas. Os seus primeiros trabalhos, livros e quadrinhos, foram impressos nos anos 70 na Itália. Publicou também livros na França e Alemanha, e seus quadrinhos tiveram edições na Espanha, Itália, Grécia, Sérvia, Dinamarca, Argentina e Brasil. Jô participou em exposições de ilustração em várias partes do mundo.
Além de outros livros que ilustrou, recebeu a indicação de Altamente Recomendável, pelo seu livro de imagens Os Donos da Bola. Seu primeiro livro publicado na Itália, Compare Gatto Impara La Lezione (Compadre Gato Aprende a Lição), fez parte do catálogo e da exposição oficial da Feira do Livro de Bologna.
Desenhista de selos postais, criou mais de 50 peças filatélicas para os Correios. Ganhou quatro vezes a medalha Olho de Boi pela criação do melhor selo brasileiro. Por duas vezes recebeu o troféu do melhor selo do mundo, na cidade de Asiago, Itália. Foi agraciado com o Prêmio Tucuxí de Ilustração, o Troféu Carlos Estevão de Humor e o Troféu de Grande Mestre dos Quadrinhos, que lhe foi entregue durante o Festival Internacional HQ-Mix em São Paulo, em 2004.
Apaixonado pela cultura popular brasileira, tem procurado sempre referencias no cordel, na xilogravura das capas dos folhetos, nos bonecos do Vitalino, no mamulengo e em diversas manifestações folclóricas.

Virtual Exhibition Commemorating 50 years of the Work of Jô Oliveira
The career of one of Brazil's greatest illustrators turns 50 years old in 2024. There are an infinity of works representing the Brazilian popular and cultural richness that went beyond the country's borders and went to show abroad, as they had already shown in the rest of the country, the talent and creativity of this son of Pernambuco.
Legends from various countries and universal classic tales, many of them incorporated into Cordel literature, Shakespeare's erudite literature, as well as unusual situations such as Roosevelt and Rondon's journey through the Amazon, are examples of the characters that come to life in Jô and in the bright colors that he knows how to use like no one else.
Aiming to celebrate these 50 years of success, this virtual exhibition presents 50 works by the artist, covering the different phases of his career. It shows, among other things, comics, posters, award-winning stamps, books in general, Cordel and children's books, telling a story that covers:
• The Great Influence of the Northeast
• The Brazil Mix
• Brazil Beyond European Beginnings
• Jô Oliveira Without Borders
Even with this small portion of the immense imaginary world created by Jô, we hope to show you the diversity of his work, the scope of the stories he has illustrated, as well as the international scope of his work.

JÔ OLIVEIRA, the imaginary of Brazil.

Much could be written, and shown, about the vast work of Jô Oliveira. Writer, designer, engraver, illustrator, comic artist, cartoonist, book cover artist, poster artist and renowned postage stamp creator. Therefore, this virtual exhibition is a commendable initiative, even considering it is just a partial sampling of this unique Brazilian artist’s works.
Despite his solid academic training in drawing, obtained both in Brazil and abroad, beginning with the School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, he chose to represent, in his images, the graphic and cultural universe of northeastern Brazil. In fact, his work is the result of various influences. First and foremost, as a basic element, there is popular northeastern toreutic art, especially woodcuts. Next would come the clay figurative pieces and groups. Other influences from beyond borders converge on the artist’s formation. I quote the Russian popular engraving, the Lubok, plus Bulgarian and Byzantine icons.
An artist with a great artistic culture, his work is an essentially Brazilian amalgamation originating from different cultures. This is very much Brazil. Jô Oliveira is the visual spokesperson of our country's imagination.

RESUMÉ JÔ OLIVEIRA
Born in Pernambuco on the Island of Itamaracá, he spent much of his childhood in Campina Grande, PB, and his adolescence in Aquidauana and Ponta Porã, MS.
He was a student at the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, and for six years he lived in Budapest, Hungary. For six months he studied cartooning at Stúdió Pannónia, and then attended the Hungarian Academy of Applied Arts (Magyar Iparmüvészeti Föiskola, today known as the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design), where he completed the Graphic Arts course. His first works, books and comics, were printed in the 70s in Italy. He also published books in France and Germany, and his comics were published in Spain, Italy, Greece, Serbia, Denmark, Argentina and Brazil. Jô participated in illustration exhibitions in various parts of the world.
In addition to other books he illustrated, he received the Highly Recommended nomination for his picture book Os Donos da Bola. His first book published in Italy, Compare Gatto Impara La Lezione (Compadre Gato Learns the Lesson), was part of the catalog and the official exhibition at the Bologna Book Fair.
Postage stamp designer, he created more than 50 philatelic pieces for the Post Office. He won the Olho de Boi medal four times for creating the best Brazilian stamp. Twice he received the trophy for the best stamp in the world, in the city of Asiago, Italy. He was awarded the Tucuxí Prize for Illustration, the Carlos Estevão Trophy for Humor and the Grand Master of Comics Trophy, which was awarded to him during the HQ-Mix International Festival in São Paulo, in 2004.
Passionate about Brazilian popular culture, he has always looked for references in the cordel, the woodcuts on the covers of the leaflets, the Vitalino dolls, the mamulengo and various folkloric manifestations.
