An American Tourist Paints
This exhibition explores a collection of 57 drawings and paintings that embody a unique artistic journey to the Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix. This body of work represents a convergence of diverse materials and innovative techniques, each carefully selected to capture the essence of this remarkable event and my personal experience as an American tourist.
In this collection, the original sketches are available within the same sketchbook the artist used while seated at the heart of the Grand Prix action. These sketches serve as authentic snapshots of the races, captured in real-time, imbued with the palpable energy and excitement of the event.
The sketches are Interwoven with large multi-panelled watercolour artworks that offer panoramic views of Manama. These scenes observed from the artist’s 14th-floor apartment depict the bustling city, the tranquil pool rooftops, and the spirited cricket games in the empty lots. These watercolours are more than mere depictions; they are windows into the daily life and vibrant culture that coexists with the Grand Prix.
A select group of mixed-media pieces in this collection incorporates resin, paper, and thermo-chromic pigments, adding a dynamic and interactive dimension to the art. These pigments change colour with shifting temperatures, mirroring the ever-evolving nature of Formula 1 racing. Embedded NFC computer chips within some works allow viewers to use their smartphones to connect to audio and video snippets of the F1 action and the streets of Manama, providing a multi-sensory experience that brings the race to life.
Another set of works embraces the tactile artistry of cold wax and thread embroidery. These watercolours, depicting aerial views of the Manama F1 track, are imbued with a deep appreciation for the human touch and craftsmanship inherent in the design of Formula 1 cars. The delicate embroidery stitches thread into the original ink sketches executed on a handmade paper symbolises the intersection of technology and artistry that defines this sport.
Throughout this collection, there is a nuanced acknowledgement of the evolving role of women and the feminine in the Formula 1 world. Erin McGee Ferrell uses floral motifs and thread to express the growing feminine interest in the sport, highlighting the harmonious interplay of strength and beauty that defines both racing and the surrounding transforming cultural landscape.
