State of the Art

Despite the world of art toys continuously growing since the early 2000s, the local scene, with designers only emerging around 2010, still lacks the exposure it needs to garner as much support as is present in the global market.

This lack of awareness surrounding art toys in the Philippine context may be attributed to a lack of intensive studies on this subculture — from its origin and its early designers, to its pioneering and current collectives.

In partnership with Art Toys PH, this research and 3D exhibit seek to serve as a catalyst in the movement towards a stronger local art toy industry and community. By shining a light on not only the history and definition of art toys in the Philippines, from the perspective of designers mainly based in Metro Manila, but also on the existing industry’s practices and influences, State of the Art dares to bring the world of art toys from the underground to the top of our shelves.

This 3D Art Toy Exhibit is curated and organized by Jan Carys Mahinay, a visual artist and an AB Arts Management student from De La Salle College of Saint Benilde. State of the Art will serve as the culminating event for his thesis project about the culture and community of the Art Toys in Metro Manila.
