First Year Master's Studio

The studio's purpose lies in comprehending the symbiotic relationship between houses as infrastructure and infrastructure for houses through an exploration of diverse housing conditions in Mumbai. The surge of mills and industries during Colonial rule in 19th-century India gave rise to informal residential structures like slums, tenement housing, and chawls. Chawls, distinctive to Mumbai, evolved as urban dwellings during the city's south-north expansion in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The creation and ownership of chawls emanate from three sources: those constructed by mill owners near their textile mills, chawls developed by the Bombay Improvement Trust (BIT), and those by the Bombay Development Department (BDD).
