What Does Pink Stand For?

This exhibition invites you to explore the fascinating world of the color pink and discover its diverse meanings across different contexts. Pink is a color composed of a mixture of red and white. We probably have the impression that pink is often linked to femininity, but this is not always the case. It has a rich history beyond its gendered connotations and is still constantly redefined and used by different individuals with their interpretations.
The inspiration for this exhibition comes from a question posted on social media: “A boy in my class likes to wear pink clothes and was ridiculed by his classmates. What should I do as a teacher?” This encourages me to broaden my knowledge of the color pink and convey my understanding of it through this exhibition. Through reflections on pink, I hope to embrace a more inclusive and open-minded perspective on various things in the world and not limited to pink.
In this exhibition, we will first journey through time to unravel what pink symboled before it became an icon of femininity. Next, we will learn about how individuals, through their experiences, have gained new definitions of pink with personal significance. We seek to foster a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between pink and human interpretation. We will understand that our thoughts sometimes are bound by the definitions. Finally, We will be encouraged to define and use pink with new meanings beyond the meaning of binary oppositions, or only think of pink as pink itself.
