As a material-centred artist, the use of concrete explores the harmonious relationship between mother nature and the man-made. When people hear the word concrete, it evokes the vision of big city concrete jungles, construction of roads and bridges, foundation for the development of civilization over the centuries, but what they don’t see or may not be aware of is the endless possibilities it can embody in art. Aligning with Dalma Göncz’s interest in sustainability and future of the Earth, the artist experiments with the manipulation of materials to create something new and dynamic, to go against the tide. Her innovative works serve as a kind of “metaphorical mirror,” confronting the viewer with a “distorted reality,” to counterbalance the negative aversion, the emission of carbon dioxide, produced by concrete to a more positive connotation, presenting it from a more artistic and appreciative perspective.
“In each of the works, it can be said that many materials are involved in the facture formation, so it is important to emphasize the layering of the paintings. The making of paintings is an imagery process similar to the stratification of the earth’s surface. After drying, each layer is expanded with another layer material, so a very varied and durable surface is obtained. This surface displays the naturally-occurring patterns in whole or in part, illustrating the amazing geological
diversity of our Earth.” The process of Dalma’s artistic creation is just as important as the materials used, the creative freedom of completely letting go of consciously driven thoughts, guided only by emotions and feelings. The combination of rigid concrete surfaces with the gentle flow of paint pigments creates a unique entity, forming a three-dimensional painting.
The idea of using concrete as a raw material derived from the fact that it is the second most used material on Earth after water, a material that is closely present in our immediate and wider environment. "FOLLOW YOUR NATURE" tells a story about the intelligence of matter and its own spontaneous eruption into a form that produces a complex beauty through simple and primitive means. It suggests techniques for finding the unexpected in the ordinary, giving
new life and meaning to forgotten materials, giving a soul to the grey.
“I am trying to put the inspiration and idea seeds gained from nature on canvas, with one of the main raw materials which is the concrete. I am also trying to bring the unique wonders, stratifications and structures of the earth's surface to life on canvas throughout the concrete, to present the complex and constantly changing relationship between the two of them. This is the concreteography,” explains Dalma Göncz.
