An Ode to the Lion City

In An Ode to the Lion City, Sound of Art’s first exhibition of local artwork presented in a hotel, we tell stories of our artists’ love for their homeland through everyday elements, such as food, public housing, architecture and even our water supply.

From Erica Wee’s Old Katong Red House Bakery, representing the artist’s childhood memories of growing up in the Katong region, to Wong Shih Yaw’s Wedding at Cana, a signpost of faith in a religiously diverse nation, we observe how each artist’s works reflect their experiences growing up in Singapore, and also with Singapore, a nation barely 58 years old.

Our hope is to share with hotel guests from all around the world, that Singapore is not merely a land of the Crazy Rich Asians, but is in itself a unique and highly intriguing creation — a port city turned global hub, surviving and thriving through 200 years of constant reinvention and multicultural evolution.

To those who call Singapore home: We hope this exhibition will inspire you to chronicle your own memories and tales from Singapore, like how our artists have captured theirs in An Ode to the Lion City.
