In our second VR presentation, we focus on the work of John Alvaro Caldas. I never met him, (he died in 2006), and was introduced to his art a few years after his death by his son John - a providential moment I think, looking back. J.A.C. painted the sweep of human experience straightforwardly and without artifice; the reason perhaps more than most why I was drawn to his paintings. And there is much to take in - man's isolation, his follies and shortcomings, the significance of old structures including church and factory, fallen women and predatory men, mental turmoil..... but also hope, redemption, the indefatigable human spirit and that increasingly rare quality in art - beauty. Is that all just too much? In the hands of such a gifted and resolute artist, I think not. To steal a quote from the esteemed Jonathan Meades, good art "...speaks to the small of the back.". A fitting description of J.A.C.'s paintings I'm certain.
