Drinking Gourd Gallery

Drinking Gourd Gallery respectfully acknowledges that our artist collective is on Indigenous land, the traditional territories of the Skaruhreh/Tuscarora and Occaneechi and Sappony peoples. We honor our ongoing connection to these communities past, present and future, and we are grateful that Indigenous communities remain at the forefront of movements to protect the Earth.

Drinking Gourd Gallery is pleased to present Something Old, Something New, a solo exhibition by North Carolina-based artist Brenda Harris on view from June 25 through August 6, 2022.

Brenda Harris: Something Old, Something New embraces experimentation and reuse. In celebration of summer, Harris presents works that reflect her love of nature. From compositions of flowers in bloom to a red bird in a tree to a whimsical llama and a barn, she shows us the beauty of the natural world. The layers, textures, colors, structure and rhythm found in Harris' work reminds us of our relationship and responsibility to the Earth. The installation features paintings created on reused papers and Masonite board and incorporates materials such as plaster.

Brenda Harris has been interested in art since early childhood. She has always had a love for drawing and often competed with her older brother in art contests. Brenda originally began studying for an art degree in her first year of college but decided to change her major to biology. Brenda went on to earn a BS degree in Biology and a BHS degree from the Physician Assistant Program at Duke University. Though she is passionate about medicine, her love of art has remained constant. Brenda is inspired by nature and its bold and bright colors. She enjoys working in acrylic and watercolor. Brenda is known for her very expressive brushwork that captures objects, animals, people and places that we may take for granted or overlook. Her works come to life on canvas and fine art paper, but she also favors weathered Masonite board, irregularly shaped papers, reused paper, wood, fabric, and poster board.

*Please note that some of the works in this exhibition have been enlarged to show detail. The actual size of each painting is included in the description.
