Here are some short notes about the delicate question of the autonomous region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol and its different ethnicities, Italian, German and Ladin, who live there and in the valleys around. Originally belonging to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, after 1919 year of annexation to Italy, the local population was Italianized by force, they were catapulted in a new reality: different rules, laws and language, valleys and rivers’ names were changed, Italian school was imposed. This situation built a wall of diffidence towards Italy, so the two dictator Hitler and Mussolini created “Options law”: Alto Adige population have to decide if stay in their native land submitting and becoming Italian or emigrate in Germany and abandon their homes.
This was the beginning of tensions and intolerance that spawned over seventy years of conflicts
