"Beautiful Beasts" by Mokhtar Paki

The Art program at Strut was founded in 2003 and we've been exhibiting the work of a different queer artist each month ever since! We had to take a break during the pandemic but we will be doing what we can to celebrate the work of queer artists while keeping our artists and community safe. Strut is still open, if you come use our sexual health services you can check out the art in person. Mokhtar Paki's art will be at Strut during the month of December and possibly January of 2020.

Artist Statement: "I use the format of Pardeh which in Persian means curtain, and is an image on a large strong panel that was hung on a wall and narrated by the Pardehkha. I’m interested in mythology, and like to narrate the sequences of my stories either in one Pardeh or a collection of smaller related images. Here I have two Pardehs and related smaller images concerning the beauty of nature in time and place. The first collection is about Varun, a homosexual god that was banished with other deities by a powerful Monotheism of Zoroastrianism about 1000 BC in Iran. Varun, who’s namesake is still the god of sea in India, was demonized and pictured in unflattering images by the religious institutions. The second collection deals with the present time , 2020 with the pandemic and the social unrest and the force of imposing nature in our uncertain lives.

About the Artist: Mokhtar lives in the Bay Area and works as a visual artist and an art teacher. Mokhtar creates and shows his works at his studio Firehouse Art Collective regularly. His Daily Sketches, reflecting social, cultural and political environment has been posted uninterrupted at the social medias since November 9, 2016.
