In de foto-expositie *Voetnoot (2020) toont fotograaf Barbara van Schaik verhalen van Nederland op z’n Nederlandst.
Nederland is, op Monaco en Vaticaanstad na, het dichtstbevolkte land van het Europese continent. Aan de letterlijke en figuurlijke voetafdruk van de mens is in het Nederlandse landschap niet te ontkomen. Waar je ook bent: nagenoeg elke vierkante meter van de beschikbare ruimte is aangelegd, aangeharkt, gereguleerd en zorgvuldig afgebakend.
Soms wordt het individu daarbij gedegradeerd tot voetnoot. Op andere momenten weet het individu de ruimte juist te claimen. In beide gevallen kan dat wringen.
En is dat mooi? Is dat erg? Is dat schokkend?
De expositie *Voetnoot toont een serie foto’s van grotendeels stedelijke landschappen: verhalen van de voetafdrukken en de voetnoten. Het spanningsveld tussen de (openbare) ruimte zoals deze is ontworpen en het daadwerkelijk gebruik ervan door het individu is voelbaar. De getoonde taferelen zijn schurend, licht absurdistisch en behept met milde ironie. Nergens trekt de fotograaf het echter in het belachelijke. Ze kijkt met een oprechte nieuwsgierigheid en heeft een grote voorliefde voor dit Nederlandse landschap.

In the exhibition *Footnote (2020) photographer Barbara van Schaik presents stories of
the Netherlands at its most Netherlandish.
The Netherlands is the third most populous country in Europe (after Monaco and Vatican City). There is no escaping the literal and figurative footprint of mankind in the Dutch landscape. Wherever you look, almost every square meter of available space has been designed, groomed, regulated and carefully demarcated.
Sometimes an individual is reduced to a mere footnote. At other times, they claim their own space and leave their unique footprint. In both cases there can be discord.
And is this beautiful? Is it bad? Is it shocking?
The exhibition *Footnote is a series of photographs of largely urban landscapes: stories of footprints and footnotes. The tension between the (public) space as it has been designed and as it is actually used by the individual is palpable. The scenes shown are somewhat abrasive, slightly absurd, and afflicted with mild irony. And yet the photographer never makes fun of it all. She looks at her environment with genuine curiosity and with great affection for this Netherlandish landscape.
All images shown in the exhibition are available in print in a limited edition of maximum 10 per image.
