Iris

by Rosscapili

In Greek mythology, “Iris” represents the rainbow
personified, the goddess whose name is derived from the ancient Greek word Ἶρις”. These magnificent, prismatic patchworks in the sky are the inspiration for Rosscapili’s 43rd solo exhibition, “Iris”.

The works in the show collectively extol the virtues of the gift of sight and appreciating the beautiful memories in our mind’s eye, as the iris allows light into our eyes so we can see, Capili’s mediums of choice–acrylic, resin, and metal–are chosen to reflect this.

Each piece features his signature broad brushstrokes, bold and confident, further emphasized by a vibrant, kaleidoscopic palette. Like the goddess it takes its name from, the exhibit links that which is divine to humanity, serving as an ode to life and all the wonders and idiosyncrasies that come with it.

Rosscapili is a multimedia artist whose works have been collected both in the Philippines and abroad. He participated in his first group exhibit in 1976 at the age of 16 at the Silangan Art Gallery and his first solo exhibit in 1981 at the City Gallery.

Since then, he has mounted over 40 solo art exhibitions in Manila as well as in Paris and the United States and participated in more than 50 group exhibitions in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Indonesia and Korea.

Rosscapili’s works have been featured in various coffee table books, including Filipino Artists In Their Studios, 21st
Century Filipino Artists, Art Collector’s Guidebook, Art Philippines and the recently launched Solaire: The Art + Design Collection.
