CORLISS R. OWEN: PLAIN FOLK
August 29 – October 15, 2022

Drinking Gourd Gallery respectfully acknowledges that our artist collective is on Indigenous land, the traditional territories of the Skaruhreh/Tuscarora and Occaneechi and Sappony peoples. We honor our ongoing connection to these communities past, present and future, and we are grateful that Indigenous communities remain at the forefront of movements to protect the Earth.

Drinking Gourd Gallery is pleased to present Corliss R. Owen: Plain Folk, a solo exhibition. Folk artist Corliss R. Owen is a visual storyteller. She creates compelling art that is steeped in tradition and conveys a sense of community. Her vivid, vibrantly colored paintings are reminiscent of heirloom quilts and beautifully capture the joys of everyday life. There is balance and harmony in Corliss’ work. A lyricism that brings to mind melodious jazz, foot stompin’ blues, old-time gospel and favorite ballads. The Corliss R. Owen: Plain Folk exhibition presents more than 20 of the artist’s paintings that work to broaden historical and cultural understandings.

What is folk art? There is no one definition of folk art. Broadly speaking, folk art celebrates cultural and spiritual life in communities. It encompasses art forms such as paintings, basketry, jewelry, metalwork, pottery, textiles, carvings, sculpture and much more. The work may be both utilitarian and decorative and does not always follow customary rules of perspective and proportion.

About the Artist
Corliss R. Owen considers herself to be a visionary folk artist, and she has been painting for more than 60 years. Corliss enjoys experimenting with different mediums and subjects in her artwork. She is a prolific artist whose body of work includes everything from crafting art for school classrooms to creating unique pieces using acrylic paints. Corliss is a North Carolina native and her work can be found in private collections in the United States.
