RENOVATIONS is an exhibit about Black education in Baltimore from church to state, from slavery to segregation to integration, from school to prison, and from private to public school. Working with the Peale Center to uncover the museum's past life as the first public high school open to Black students, our research evolved to look at how the history of Black education continues to shape Baltimore City. Large scale drawings - one of Bethel AME and one of the Crownsville State Hospital come to life through AR. The church and the asylum show two very different interpretations of “public service” - how Black citizens were perceived by the state as opposed to within their own communities. Projected interactive video experimentally visualizes the class motto “Through the tempest to the stars” while two desks, one heated to 85 degrees and the other cooled to 60, remind visitors that many Baltimore City Public schools still do not have working HVAC.
We want to provide spaces where the community can interact with our work and go on an experiential journey with us. Our thoughtful blend of art and technology rediscovers narratives so that we can, together, engineer a more compassionate future.
