ANCIENT NICOMEDIA & İZMİT ILLUSTRATIONS EXHIBITION MANIFEST

With 2300 years of history, Izmit was called Nicomedia in the ancient times. After being the capital of the Hellenistic Bithynia Kingdom, the Roman Empire’s Bithynia Estate and the Roman Empire itself, Ancient Nicomedia was conquered by the Ottoman Emperor, Orhan Bey, in 1337. İzmit has preserved its historic significance throughout centuries with its geographical location and natural resources. Although it is known as “the city of kings and emperors” by travelers and has cultural importance, it is the least historically recognized city in modern Turkey.

Despite its fame, there are very little historical relics left of Nicomedia and Ottoman İzmit. So, in order scientifically and artistically to make up for this historical deficit, I present these pieces of art. The exhibit, consisting of 21 pieces, is the work of 16 years. Each and every piece is the outcome of about 4 months of delicate work. The use of travel books, ancient texts, coins, excavation reports, historical documents and findings has led to the making of scientific products.

These pieces of art which I have started to draw with the encouragement of my dear professor and colleague Prof. Dr. Halil İnalcık has been displayed in Dolmabahçe Palace Exhibition Hall / Istanbul between January 27 - February 2 in 2014. In addition, a portion of these pieces are being displayed in the SEKA Paper Museum, which was founded in November 2016 in İzmit. I would like to thank the Art Nicomedia Association for the opportunity to present these pieces of art electronically to all of you.
