Raise the Bar
“Making any kind of art should always present us with a paradox: we want it to be liked but we don’t want unconditional praise: We want it to be perfect at the same time as knowing it can always be better.
So, as well as needing spaces anyone can access, we need those spaces to present us with material with which we can compare our own work.
That way, artists are able to look upwards with their work. Each of us needs a sense of how our work compares with others.
That way, we are always raising the bar. That way we have the opportunity to develop.
That way the fish from the smaller pond can dream of swimming in the sea.”
