Wead Art on the Edge: From Extraction to Restoration and Regeneration Part One

“Art on the Edge: From Extraction to Restoration and Regeneration Part I” is Women Eco Artists Dialog's first offering in response to the Codex Foundation’s challenge to create an “art ruckus” around the theme of EXTRACTION, Art on the Edge of the Abyss.

A global coalition of artists and creators are shining light on all forms of extractive industry—from mining and drilling to the reckless plundering and exploitation of fresh water, fertile soil, timber, marine life, and innumerable other resources across the globe. This multimedia, multi-venue, cross-border art intervention seeks to provoke societal change by exposing and interrogating the negative social and environmental consequences of industrialized natural resource extraction. The project is being produced independently within over 50 art spaces nationwide between 2019-2022.

This WEAD membership exhibition was created in collaboration with Gallery Route One in Point Reyes, CA and was on view there from September 18 to October 24, 2021.

Curators Pamela Blotner and Toni Littlejohn note that this exhibition “depicts instances of environmental extraction worldwide including the excesses of illegal gold mining, the dangers of offshore drilling for petroleum, the effects of rising global temperatures, long line and drag net fishing that exhaust marine life and increase ocean pollution, and the hunting of species to the point of extinction. The exhibition also presents restorative solutions such as sequestering carbon from the atmosphere back into the soil via regenerative agricultural practices.”
Included in this online exhibition are selected works of 13 of the 16 participating artists. Similar works to those not shown here by Caroline Landau and Lorna Stevens can be seen in Wead’s Part II exhibition also on Kunstmatrix.
MIe Preckler’s ongoing intervention in the existing landscape at I-Park is well documented at
