Memorias

I was born in the Dominican Republic. I’ve always been fascinated by memories and photographs. All memories take us to places, stories and moments in our life where we can find comfort. I spend my life keeping photos because they remind me of that moment in time. I hold on to them because they are a part of something magical and something that I'm never experiencing again.

Memories from Dominican Republic jump into my life here in the United States. Some memories here are being repeated because these moments in life are important to me. Like when I first met my little sister, it was one of the best days of my life and I captured it. I am reliving the moment by collaging these photographs, helping me find the woman I am becoming. I’ve discovered a way to be connected to good times and forget about the hard times. Having fun memories of myself helps me look at my life in a different way.

With this series, I explore the idea of memories that silently work to shape us into who we are. We are constantly moving, and because of this, our identity is always evolving. But our memories stick with us, creating a sort of continuity that makes us whole. Through an exploration of my current environment with the photographs of forgotten childhood memories, I was able to reconnect with my full self. I use my old photographs to find a place of comfort in my new country but also to forget about the hard “times”. These photographs represent part of my cultural beliefs, going into that moment in time for me and my family. These memories within memories last longer than forever.
