Genealogy is a journey of tracing my family’s history, my lineage, my ancestry. As a child with a genetic blood disorder, I’ve always wondered about the origins of my oddly elliptical shaped blood cells. The blood smears from my mother, my grandmother, my father, and grandfather all have traces of these oddly shaped cells passed down from generation to generation. This disorder affects 1 in every 3,000 to 5,000 people in the United States alone. I often wonder how did both sides of my family’s tree carry this trait for so long until it met its match; Kris Keys, a full carrier of Hereditary Elliptocytosis.

Heritage and genetics have a way of stamping or impregnating us with habits, lingo, and familiar patterns. Both wanted and unwanted. Both good and bad. Both ugly and beautiful.
Through relationships, disorders, and rough patches, there’s still room to bloom. Join me on peeling back layers of the Black American family one petal at a time. If each flower could speak, what would it say to you?

Follow me on this journey of discovery. I hope it will encourage you to start your own path to uncovering your family’s identity.
