Gathering

Pink pelicans gather in a wooded thicket at the water’s edge in Pam Heemskerk’s hauntingly reflective photograph. This instinctive social behavior, a means of survival in the animal kingdom, emerges as a threat in the season of an international pandemic.

Yet there are other means through which we gather. This curation of photographs, selected from artists scattered across the world, exemplifies the many manifestations of gathering: ideas, clusters, physical collections, grasping onto things, to memories, weaving them together, and even gathering oneself amidst an emotional or psychological unraveling.

While selecting which artwork to bring together in this virtual exhibition, images began to speak in conversation with one another: what a fascinating social interaction from a set of silent photographs. As you move within the space, don’t look only at what’s before you, but consider its neighbors-- a tree clinging to rock mimics the part revealed between a pair of braids, their two tufts in a blue composition, rounded like the body of a cactus tumbling over a wall, obscuring a figure, as yet another cannot seem to hide, reaching to nature in a state of raw vulnerability.

In his poem, On Gathering Artists, Alberto Ríos writes ‘we send as our voice the poem, the bridge, the circuit, the cure.’ And here we are, following an insuppressible instinct to create, express and share, inviting you to be a part of the gathering.
