Check the Mail for Her Letter

'Check the Mail for Her Letter' explores memory and loss. Two streams of visuals weave in and out of one another: a collection of modern photographs from the months surrounding my grandmother's passing; and the other, a series of reimagined family photos as I consider the effects of dementia on the mind. Gouache and wax pencil obscure and highlight elements to represent both the slippage of memory and the preservation of seemingly mundane details.

In the expanded collection of this work, a letter, never-mailed, becomes my own proof of reality while unraveling a synchronous string of dreams and events that led me to imagine the space where lucidity and delusion intermingle. The last time I saw my grandmother her mind briefly slipped as she insisted, thinking I was her daughter, that she had to go out to the old farmhouse to check the mail.

Could she have possibly known that I would be sitting here today, still holding on to that unsent letter? —words that would have been my last communication before losing her completely.
