Antimicrobial resistance (abbreviation AMR) represents the resistance of bacteria, viruses and parasites to medication. In contact with antibiotics, bacteria neutralize them or adjust their metabolism to protect themselves.

According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control in 2008, 25 000 deaths and 2.5 million cases of prolonged hospital treatment annually were caused by infections of multidrug-resistant bacteria. New studies suggest that by 2050, antimicrobial resistance could become the leading cause of death in the world.

This means that all the diseases which we treated very quickly and easily in the past could lead to serious complications and even death in the future.
