Enso Practice by Natasha Kempers-Cullen

ZEN MONKS DRAW CIRCLES. THESE SPECIAL CIRCLES ARE CALLED ENSO.

THE CIRCLE IS ENDLESS, WHOLE, SIMPLE. IT REPRESENTS WISDOM, POWER, ENLIGHTENMENT, THE UNIVERSE ITSELF.

THE DRAWING OF ENSO IS A DAILY SPIRITUAL EXERCISE FOR SOME OF THE ZEN MONKS. I WAS IMMEDIATELY DRAWN IN TO THIS PRACTICE ON A PURELY VISCERAL LEVEL.

THE SERIES OF PAINTINGS YOU SEE HERE IS ONE OF MY RESPONSES TO THE PRACTICE. MY INTERPRETATIONS INCLUDE LOTS OF COLOR (OF COURSE!!), MOVEMENT, AND THE INTERACTIONS OF SHAPES.
