Terra Incognita by Juliana Lima

Inspired by the fluid and endlessly evolving natural world, Juliana Lima’s latest works feature a creative use of material to express her deep connection with nature. Her works attempt to capture the delicate tension between harmony and change, stasis and motion. Just as nature is governed by the laws of entropy and evolution, Juliana’s artistic vision is guided by a search for the patterns and interconnectedness that underlies the chaos of constant change.

Terra Incognita is a Latin term used in cartography for regions that have not been mapped or documented. The expression is believed to be first seen in Ptolemy’s Geography (c. 150) and the term was re-introduced in the 15th century from the rediscovery of Ptolemy’s works in the Age of Discovery. Used in old cartographic maps to denote areas that were undiscovered, the phrase is also used metaphorically today for unexplored subjects or fields of research. This title reflects her discovery of the elemental amalgamation of water, earth, fire and light as she experiments with a mix of media including sand, glass, metals, plaster and resin.
