Annie Leibovitz: The Art of Portraiture

Tue, 12/11/2018 to Fri, 12/14/2018

Portrait photography is virtually everywhere in today’s world. We see photos of people on the street, magazines, social media, etc. Photographs that are set apart and help to a higher standard are the ones that are not only visually beautiful, but represent the subject on a more personal level. In this exhibition of portraits by Annie Leibovitz the photographs give insight on who the subject truly is as a person, not as their occupation, social status, or anything else that people might try to label them as, but instead their personality and overall demeanor. Though these portrait subjects happen to be widely known celebrities, the beauty does not come from their fame or looks alone, but instead from the way that the images allow viewers to connect with the person and who they truly are as an individual- not just as a celebrity. The hope is that these large scale photos draw the viewer in to take a closer look at every detail that makes these photographs so intimate and unique. There are topics of masculinity, femininity, intimacy, vulnerability, artistic expression, humor, and more. There are grand gestures and classic black and whites- each photo's style fits the corresponding individual's personality while simultaneously displaying a cohesive body of work that effortlessly expresses the art of portraiture.
