Get some perspective!

We live in a three-dimensional world where the two-dimensional are constantly rendered to appear as 3D. It’s such a familiar concept to the contemporary viewer that it’s easy to forget there was a time when the idea of lineal perspective was still very new. Of course, “perspective” has always existed, and the ancient Greeks understood it philosophically. However, measuring it and modelling it, was left to the 15th Century Italian architect and engineer Filippo Brunelleschi who, around 1415, demonstrated a mathematical approach that proved how forms and space shrink in size according to their location and distance from the eye.

In 1435 Leon Battista Alberti was also working on a theory of linear perspective relying on mathematics. Alberti made this new and exciting field popular through his published treatise Della Pictura (On Painting).

These two key players had an enormous impact on European artists and their methods are still used by artists, designers and architects today.

In this exhibition we showcase works by artists who apply their own “viewpoint” to the wonderful world of “perspective”.
