INTRODUCTION AFTER THE SILENCE
The curated exhibition *AFTER THE SILENCE* explores the state following a pause—that threshold moment of silence.
The exhibition addresses the theme of silence not merely as the absence of noise, but as a counterpoint to the sensory overload caused by news, images, and constant availability. "After The Silence": the moment between the nervous system overload and fresh start reloaded. What happens when the world’s background noise falls silent?
ABOUT THE ZEN GARDEN SERIES & ART PROCESS
In "After the Silence", Kenji Ichikawa presents Zen Garden, a body of work that reflects on the fragile equilibrium between technological complexity and contemplative stillness. Rooted in his pioneering Pixel Montage technique, developed in 1988, the series transforms digital imagery into meditative visual landscapes that reveal themselves only through sustained observation.
Ichikawa's artistic language is based on the reconstruction of images from thousands of photographic fragments. This meticulous process challenges conventional ways of seeing by constantly shifting between the microscopic and the monumental. What initially appears as a serene Japanese Zen garden gradually dissolves into an intricate network of electronic circuit boards, inviting viewers to reconsider the boundaries between representation and reality.
Inspired by the Zen gardens of Kyoto, the artist discovered an unexpected visual affinity between the carefully raked gravel, precisely positioned stones, and the ordered geometry of electronic circuitry. Rather than presenting technology as the opposite of nature, Ichikawa reveals a shared visual vocabulary of rhythm, balance, and structure. The circuit board becomes a contemporary landscape; the Zen garden emerges as a timeless blueprint of interconnected systems.
The works unfold through movement. From afar, they radiate calm and harmony. As the viewer approaches, the illusion gives way to thousands of photographic details, exposing the hidden architecture that forms the image. This oscillation between distance and proximity becomes an essential part of the viewing experience, encouraging a heightened awareness of perception itself.
Within the context of After the Silence, Zen Garden offers a quiet yet profound meditation on our relationship with the increasingly technological world. Ichikawa does not propose a conflict between nature and innovation, but instead uncovers their surprising coexistence. His works remind us that beneath apparent opposites lie shared principles of order, interdependence, and balance. In an age defined by information and acceleration, Zen Garden invites us to slow down, to look closer, and to rediscover silence as a space of reflection.
ABOUT KENJI ICHIKAWA
The contemporary artist KENJI ICHIKAWA was born in Nagano Prefecture, Japan in 1967. He studied in Tokyo at Musashino Art University and holds a Bachelor's degree in Art and a Masters Degree from the Graduate School of Musashino Art University. KENJI ICHIKAWA's work has been exhibitited in renowned art museums and art biennales, amoung them Chino Municipal Museum of Art,Nagano (Japan), Shanghai Art Museum / China Art Palace, Shanghai,(China), Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre (Singapore), NordArt 2025 (Kunstwerk Carlshütte, Büdelsdorf, Germany).
