Armidale NSW is the newest refugee settlement location and home to approximately 650 Ezidi community members from Iraq. Armidale has proven to be a welcoming community since and even before the first families arrived in February 2018. Porch Portraits aims to record and reflect first person narrative about what welcome means to them and then shared with the wider community. Photos will be displayed through online platforms and local businesses at the consent of participants for Refugee Week.
Refugee Week provides a platform where positive images of refugees can be promoted to create a culture of welcome throughout the country. The ultimate aim of the celebration is to create better understanding between different communities and to encourage successful integration enabling refugees to live in safety and to continue making a valuable contribution to Australia.
