1951年6月3日、東京都生まれ。当初は小説の挿絵画家を目指すも、1960年代のマンガの隆盛を機に漫画に興味が移り、本格的に漫画家を目指すようになった。望月あきらや中島徳博の下でアシスタントを務めたのち、1972年に『週刊少年ジャンプ』掲載「燃えて走れ」でデビュー。以降、『週刊少年サンデー』に活躍の場を移した。大ヒット作「六三四の剣」以降はさらに青年誌に移行し「龍-RON-」「JIN-仁-」のヒットを連発。「JIN-仁-」はテレビドラマ化(大沢たかお主演)され高視聴率を記録した。講談社漫画賞、小学館漫画賞、文化庁メディア芸術祭マンガ部門優秀賞、手塚治虫文化賞等を受賞している。
Born in Tokyo on June 3, 1951, he initially aspired to be a novel illustrator, but the rise of manga in the 1960s sparked his interest in comics and his desire to pursue a career as a manga artist. After working as an assistant to Akira Mochizuki and Tokuhiro Nakajima, he made his debut in 1972 with "Moete Hashire" (Run with Fire) in Weekly Shonen Jump. He subsequently moved to Weekly Shonen Sunday. After his smash hit "Roku Sanshi no Ken," he moved to young adult magazines, producing a string of hits with "Ryu-RON" and "JIN." "JIN" was adapted into a television drama starring Takao Osawa, achieving high ratings. He has received awards including the Kodansha Manga Award, the Shogakukan Manga Award, the Excellence Award in the Manga Division of the Japan Media Arts Festival, and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.
