About the photographer:
Amir Hamja
Amir Hamja is an award-winning photographer based in New York City. He became the first Bangladeshi photographer to join The New York Times as a fellow during its prestigious 2023-24 Fellowship Program. Originally from Chittagong, Bangladesh, Amir studied Pharmaceutical Science before moving to New York in 2017. There, he pursued photography at the International Center of Photography on a Director’s Scholarship. Amir served as the official photographer for the Emmy Award-winning Netflix show “Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj”. He also worked as creative consultant for Hasan’s Netflix specials. Amir’s breakthrough came with his photo series “Protest for George Floyd,” which caught the attention of The New York Times and marked the start of his collaborations with the publication. He recently photographed vice president Kamala Harris at her SNL appearance for Washington post. His work appeared on National Geographic, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, De Volkskrant, The Guardian, etc . In 2017, he received the National Award at the Sony World Photography Awards in London.
