“Eve’s tears turned to lily of the valley as she wept in the Garden of Eden”. Lily of the Valley are delicate yet deadly flowers that represent purity, sincerity, and a “return to happiness”. Through the progression of digital and oil paintings, the emotional directionality and the intentional sensitivity of the painting process itself are unveiled. Communicating what is not so easily verbalized and focusing on aspects of the portrait that feel as if they are in a state of constant fluctuation, pairing the lily of the valley with the self portrait creates haunting reflections of self image and of one’s personal journey to “return to happiness”.
