Chasing Colour
The colours in my paintings appear to move forward then back and sometimes, like people, stand still or burst into colourful explosions of activity. The compositional features of these abstract paintings on canvas highlight the characteristic opposites of mark making, pattern and colour. Ribbons of colourful paint overlay areas of contrasting colours, whilst graphic patterns sit opposite organic blooms of pigment. These experimental paintings offer a visual journey of time spent in the studio. The culmination of ideas and thoughts expressed in the vibrant, uplifting hues invite the viewer to contemplate their own associations and memories.
Purposely seeking to create contradictions in the process of making these paintings, the intentional ' busyness ' of the picture space and multitude of colours and variation of patterns rests closely to my life experiences of the world around me. A marked change in my work that has evolved after a recent swift shift in my paid occupation following the Covid wave that embraced a diversity of life, people and living environments where time is valued more than anything else.
