Omar Hassan - Breaking the Habit - 3D virtual exhibition by Cris Contini Contemporary

Omar Hassan - Breaking the Habit

Born in Milan in 1987 to an Egyptian father and an Italian mother, Omar Hassan was introduced to the Milan underground art scene at a young age. Hassan’s initial interest in street art soon developed into a passion for a diverse range of art, leading him to pursue a fine art degree at the Fine Art Academy of Brera. While studying at the Academy, Hassan discovered a strong attraction to post-war Italian artists such as Lucio Fontana and Piero Manzoni in whose works the creative process is as much a part of the artwork as the final result.

Speaking about the impact of street art on his work, Hassan said ‘Street Art techniques have always been a fundamental element of my practice; this stems from experimenting with spray-paint in the tunnels of Milan as a teenager. I have continued to use spray paints as homage to the street art genre, yet it is not a movement that I am defined by. I don’t enjoy the limitations of being categorized’.

Influenced by these artists, but eager to be innovative in his approach, Hassan used his personal experiences to shape his artistic method. The resulting conceptual artworks are dynamic and colourful manifestations of Hassan’s talent as an artist.
Following a successful solo exhibition in London in 2015, Hassan was named a finalist for the Cairo Art Prize. He was also invited by the prestigious art foundation Maimeri to exhibit at the renowned MAC (Music, Art and Culture) Centre in Milan. ‘Breaking Through Milan’, curated by the renowned Luca Beatrice, ran from 28th September – 17th October 2016.
His solo exhibition "Do Ut Des" (Give to receive) opened during the 57th Venice Biennale 2017, located in the 10th century Chiesetta della Misericordia in Venice.

Hassan’s last fatigue has been the solo exhibition “Sottosopra”, opened from the 23rd February to the 28th March 2020 in PAN, Palazzo delle Arti in Naples, Italy.
