Alvin Roy works in mixed-media assemblage, bas-relief wall pieces, and oil paint with reference to profoundly spiritual themes inspired by music and cultural archetypes. Jazz is an important catalyst for Roy’s paintings as he weaves together keyboards, saxophones and colorful patterns that rhythmically intertwine and passionately shift tones. In Roy’s sculptural wall bas-reliefs, he seeks to deify the spirit that exists in all humans.Alvin Roy then represents this energetic power in the form of Pharaohs and other figures of ancient Egyptian mythology. While exploring different forms and materials, Roy finds precious light in ordinary substances . More recently,Alvin Roy has been working on mixed media paintings and collage on paper that are best understood in context to the quilting tradition prominent in Southern United States cultural history in general and the Underground Railroad in particular.
