HER
In celebration of Women's History Month and International Women's Day, Drinking Gourd Gallery presents the exhibition, HER on view from March 1 through March 31, 2022. This group exhibition places women and girls at the forefront, as subject matter and as artists. HER features the work of Corliss R. Owen, Brenda Harris, Carol Torian, Mayanthi Jayawardena, Shelvy Ramsey Torian, Kirsten Moore, and Jade. Collectively, these artists represent different generations and ethnic backgrounds, some are students, some are immigrants, some are parents, and all are balancing the joys and challenges of being an artist. Their artwork showcases a diversity of styles, themes, and techniques and provides for an exploration of powerful images of women and girls that are alternately witty, funny, resolute, and introspective.

In 2020, we celebrated the centennial of the women’s suffrage movement. Yet, despite activism and advances in the professional, political, and social realm, women-identified artists have been engaged in a continual struggle to receive recognition of their work. HER highlights the crucial role of women in pushing creative boundaries and seeks to redress the systemic discrimination against women in the arts. The exhibition also strives to foster a more inclusive conversation about the contributions of female artists.

Women have been creating art for thousands of years, but familial and financial constraints have prevented some women from engaging in a sustained study of the arts. Additionally, women artists have been denied access to art academies, museums, apprenticeships, and galleries, and faced subject matter and creative space restrictions. At a time in history where we are questioning institutions and their guiding principles, gender bias continues to be a major problem in the modern art world. Women, however, remain resilient, focused, and determined to pursue their creative paths.

Through an outstanding presentation, HER features over 30 works in a range of mediums from paintings, prints, watercolors, and mixed media to collages, and drawings. The works break down boundaries with bold contours and rich colors, while focusing on themes such as love, hope, healing, beauty, individuality, race, social justice, and the passage of time from girlhood to womanhood. Included in the exhibition are representations of Ruby Bridges, Maya Angelou, Shirley Chisholm, Frida Kahlo, and many others.

The HER virtual and in-person exhibition is made possible by Drinking Gourd Gallery.

Major support for the in-person exhibition is provided by Rocky Mount Mills.
