In The Claws of Neon - 3D virtual exhibition by Galerie Roberto

In The Claws of Neon

The exhibition “In the Claws of Neon” takes its name from Lino Brocka’s 1975 cinematic masterpiece, “Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag”, which was shot by Mike de Leon, and was based on Edgardo Reyes’ novel, “Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag”.

The works in the exhibition echo the imagery that proliferate the film: bodies caught in labor or in a state of tired immobility, all suspended against the backdrop of a city fuelled by chaos, torment, and unjust hierarchies ruled by the powerful and wealthy. There is tension in this juxtaposition of the bodies and the city that is almost cruel in its irony: there is a sickening sweetness that emanates from the neon intensity of Manila’s city lights that draws these dreaming and labouring bodies to the city like moths to a flame.

In the film, we witness the protagonist hustle as he tries to survive while doggedly search for his lover Ligaya Paraiso. He finds her, but once again loses her to the unkind city.

Dreams of a Joyful Paradise forever dreamed but never fulfilled, but dreamed nonetheless by the perseverance and resolve of the impoverished, their light distinguished by the greed and inhumanity that inhabit the city basking in the saturated colors of its urban sprawl–it’s this rich leitmotif in Brocka’s film that the exhibition tries to take on.

“In the Claws of Neon” features the works of Art Sanchez, Andre Baldovino, Clark Manalo, Emmanuel Miranda, Jep Dizon, Julius Redillas, Jun Tuplano, Kenneth Santiago, Kiko Capile, Kiko Urquiola, Kim Hamilton Sulit, RC RC, Raphael Carloto, Renato Bulate, Ted Penaflor, and Wipo.
