1988年小池一夫劇画村塾で本格的に漫画を描き始め、同年「月刊アフタヌーン」四季賞を受賞する。受賞作である「杯気分！肴姫」で、1991年「モーニング」（講談社）で連載デビュー。連載第2作「のんちゃんのり弁」はテレビドラマ化される。その後、連載時の自分と同年代の女性を主人公にした「おかめ日和」「たそがれたかこ」「ゆりあ先生の赤い糸」を立て続けに連載し、「ゆりあ先生の赤い糸」は講談社漫画賞、手塚治虫文化賞マンガ大賞を受賞する。多様な登場人物による多様なエピソードを丹念に綴る群像劇を描き、多くの漫画好きを唸らせている。
He began drawing manga in earnest in 1988 with Koike Kazuo's Gekiga Murajuku, and won the Shiki Prize in the same year from Monthly Afternoon. His award-winning work, "Cup Mood! Sakanahime," made his serial debut in Morning (Kodansha) in 1991. His second serialized work, "Non-chan Noriben," was adapted into a TV drama. He then went on to serialize "Okame Biyori," "Tasogare Takako," and "Yuria Sensei's Red Thread," all of which feature women of the same age as he was when the series was serialized, with "Yuria Sensei's Red Thread" winning the Kodansha Manga Award and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Manga Grand Prize. He has impressed many manga fans with his meticulous ensemble dramas that weave together a diverse cast of characters and episodes.
