3D FOUNDATION - 3D virtual exhibition by Environmental Art Gallery

3D FOUNDATION

In universities around the country, the lockdowns in response to the COVID19 pandemic were swift, nearly immediate. We are amidst the organized and systematic transition of pedagogy and display relegated to virtual space in which perception becomes flattened to screen accompanied by mic-mediated sound. As we leave these 2D spaces, 3D Foundation students share their inquiries and experiments centering on questions of translation and representation.
This online exhibition showcases the complexities and functions of sculpture in the Zoom classroom and studio era. Phone photography became the primary medium used to document and translate works into web-based public forums. The viewer's experience becomes mediated not by a gallery or site but by the artist’s method of translation and their own electronic viewing device. The working methodologies of the pieces featured are inspired by a range of forms, varying from monument, modernist sculpture, assemblage, and site-specific artworks. Each piece was created in the 3D realm considering the material, scale, shape, texture, weight, color, etc., of lived spaces, then brought to this display.
As you maneuver throughout this gallery, consider the foundations questions these young artists' grappled with as they created both sculptural interventions and work for virtual gallery walls: What’s gained/lost in the documentation of a 3D object? How do everyday objects become art? What is the relationship between an art project, object, and site?
